Gort Community School 12-7 Portumna Community School 0-5
Tuesday April 19th 2016
The 1st year “A” Connacht Colleges Camogie final was played in front of a big crowd on a bright day in Kilnadeema. The game started at a hectic pace with no scores for the first 6 minutes. An Elaine Dolphin goal helped settle the Gort girl’s nerves. Their lead was added to with points from Eadaoin Gardiner & Aine Keane. Portumna battled valiantly & 2 fine long range points from Alannah Kelly kept them in touch. But the south Galway girls were becoming more dominant. Elaine Dolphin hit the net twice more & a Rachel Burke ground strike also raised a green flag. Three more Aine Keane pointed frees gave Gort a 4-4 to 0-3 interval lead.
There was no let up in the second half with Rachel Burke helping herself to a quartet of goals and a point & Elaine Dolphin hitting the net a number of times also. Louise Keehan got brilliant goal from a solo run. Aine Keane giving an exhibition of point scoring from play and frees at centre forward. The Gort Defence & midfield were on top with Ziyan Spillane & Nicola Quinn in particular really impressing. When referee Michael Treacy blew the final whistle it sparked wild celebrations from the girls in black & white.
Every one of the Gort Community School panel deserve huge credit for the work they put in throughout the year. The future of Gort Community School camogie looks very bright!
