Poetry Day Ireland – A Poem for GCS
Today, Thursday 29 April 2021, marks Poetry Day Ireland.
To mark the day, we asked staff to nominate their favourite Irish poem. We then whittled down the list to the six most nominated poems.
Staff were then asked to vote for their favourite poem from the shortlist. The results are in:
6th place: ‘Mid-Term Break’ by Seamus Heaney
5th place: ‘The Wild Swans at Coole’ by W.B. Yeats
4th place: ‘The Lake Isle of Innisfree’ by W.B. Yeats
3rd place: ‘On Raglan Road’ by Patrick Kavanagh
2nd place: ‘Postscript’ by Seamus Heaney
And the winning poem for the ‘Poetry Day Ireland – A Poem for GCS’ is:
‘Digging’ by Seamus Heaney.
‘Between my finger and my thumb
The squat pen rests.
I’ll dig with it.’
