Additional Educational Needs At G.C.S.

In Gort Community School we value each and every one of our pupils as unique individuals, whilst our staff strive to promote a holistic and inclusive education for all.

Within our Additional Educational Needs Department, we have a dedicated and specialised team that work together for the educational benefit of our students.
These include our A.S.D department , resource team, learning support, Special Needs Assistants (SNA’S) and our A.E.N coordinator.
Together with the involvement of outside agencies such as:

National Educational Psychological Services (N,E.P.S.)
The Special Educational Needs Officer (S.E.N.O)
Special Educational Support Services (S.E.S.S.)
we can offer individual and small group tuition, learning support, team teaching ,diagnostic assessment and concessions for state examinations.

We strongly recognise that the transition from primary to post primary involves many challenges and changes such as new surroundings, different routines, new staff and subjects. Therefore we have a transition scheme in place for the last number of years. Any new student can attend the school for a morning or an afternoon, once a week in the month of May.
This facilitates the students learning about G.C.S. before they come back in August/September. Teachers and parents can contact the school to arrange this induction process.

All local primary schools are contacted in October of the previous year to furnish us with any reports or additional needs that their students may have.
Parents also have the facility to bring these reports on our Open Day and can arrange an appointment with the co-ordinator of A.E.N.
These reports are summarised and circulated to the relevant teachers.
This helps our co-ordinator plan for their arrival to Gort.
