Here in Gort Community School we have some very strong soccer teams. We have teams representing the school in all grades from 1st year to U19. The school competes in the North Munster Soccer Leagues and Cups and in the 1st year All-Ireland Futsal competition. We are very lucky to have great training facilities here. We have the soccer pitch, the floodlit Astro-Turf and the hall in the community centre. We have some very good players in the school, some of whom have been selected for Irish Emerging Talent squads.
Gort Community School is twinned with Lycée Notre Dame in Guingamp, France. This school is the academy school for the French Ligue 1 soccer club En Avant de Guingamp. Each year our second year French pupils go to Guingamp on the French Exchange for a week and over the last number of years the schools soccer department has forged links with the soccer club also. This is a great development for soccer in Gort Community School. In the past three years thanks to the schools French Exchange, some of our talented footballers have been invited to train with the U15 team of EA Guingamp, the club where former Chelsea players Florent Malouda and Didier Drogba, and Arsenals Laurent Koscielny started their careers. Last year the schools U14 soccer team went to France for a week, in conjunction with the French Exchange, and were trained by the clubs coaches and played games against both local club teams and the En Avant de Guingamp U15 team. This was a great experience for them.
